The beginnings of Beefeater Gin trace back to 1862, when the Beefeater's founder, James Burrough, bought the Chelsea distillery for 400 £ and began producing his own distinctive style of gin as soon as 1863 ? merely one year later. The recipe used for today's Beefeater Gin is still the same as 150 years ago, when Burrough first devised it. Beefeater identifies nine essential botanicals, which give the delicious gin its unique flavour profile ? namely: juniper, angelica root, angelica seeds, coriander seeds, liquorice, almonds, orris root, Seville oranges and lemon peel. In order to extract as much of the ingredient's volatile oils as possible, thus making Beefeater Gin rich in taste, Beefeater steeps some of its ingredients for 24 hours prior to distillation. The process of distilling Beefeater Gin takes a total of eight hours and is entirely overseen by Beefeater's master distiller, Desmond Payne.
