The Caol Ila Distillers Edition is a whisky from the Caol Ila distillery in Scotland. These were founded in 1846 by Hector Henderson on the Scottish Islay and are still located there today. The distillery attaches great importance to tradition and high-quality production. For example, the water used for the whiskies is extracted from the nearby Lock nam Ban. The Caol Ila Distillers Edition 2001/2013 belongs to a distillery series that is published every year at the Classic Malts.

Maturation

The Caol Ila Distillers Edition Whisky spends the first 12 years of storage in oak barrels. The whisky is then bottled for a further six months in refining barrels on the Iberian Peninsula (also known as the Pyrenean Peninsula). These Moscatel barrels previously contained wine or sherry. This adds a fruity note to the smoky, spicy character of the whisky. The Caol Ila Distillers Edition Scotch Whisky was distilled in 2001 and bottled in 2013 with an alcohol content of 43% vol.

Taste

The Caol Ila Distillers Edition is highly complex and multi-layered due to its storage in different types of casks. The two dominating columns are determined by the sweetness and the spice. Fruity dominant are especially aromas of apples and lime. The spicy character attracts with almond and marzipan. When the fruity, spicy tones have arrived on the palate, a peaty smoky note comes to the fore, which is characteristic of whisky from this region. The taste of the Caol Ila Distillers Edition fits perfectly into the "phase standard" of the Caol Ila distillery: several stages of different flavours are typical of the whisky of the distillery.

Finish

The complexity of the whisky is also reflected in the finish. This is long, warm and consists of an embrace of smoke and spice. The soft sweetness and fruitiness that the Caol Ila Distillers Edition Scotch Whisky gains from the ageing in the refining barrels are also noticeable on the palate.
