How did Citadelle Gin come to be and who manufactures it?
Due to its clever traditional recipe and the fact that it is entirely handmade Citadelle Gin is bound to become one of your new favourite gins. The spirit is a rendition of the iconic genièvre by Frenchmen Carpeau and Stival, who in 1775 were commissioned by Louis XVI to open a distillery at the citadelle in Dunkirk and authorised them to be the royal distillery with a 20-year contract. In order to manufacture the genièvre, Carpeau and Stival ordered twelve copper pot stills, which were officially the first of their type in France.
Citadelle Gin is the brainchild of Alexandre Gabriel, who first had the idea in 1989, when gin had become an industrialised spirit. Gabriel felt that the quality of most gins was not sufficient to saturate the needs of real gin lovers, which is why he decided that he needed to introduce the market to a handmade juniper spirit following an original recipe from the old days.
In order to find the right recipe for Citadelle Gin, Gabriel spent several years in the Belgian city Flanders, where he searched through old records and files in order to find a recipe that truly embraced the spirit of traditional gin. After he had found what he was looking for, him and his master distiller were successful in bottling their gin under the name Citadelle and making it available to the public.
When it comes to the making of Citadelle Gin, the brand relies on techniques from the 17th century. Like their role model from 1775, the distillers of Citadelle use small copper pot stills in order to make their gin, granting Citadelle Gin an exceptionally pure and crisp taste. The premium spirit is based on a grain distillate, which is distilled four times in order to make it as smooth as possible. It will convince you with its great flavour, which offers a stunning arrangement of juniper, noble spices and floral botanicals, before leaving you with a rich and long-lasting aftertaste.
Cocktails and long drinks on the basis of Citadelle Gin
Citadelle Gin is an outstanding spirit that is also perfectly suitable for being used as the basis for a wide variety of gin-based cocktails and long drink. For example the deliciously sweet ?Alexandra?, for which you will need 3 cl Creme de Cacao, 3 cl cream and 3 cl Citadelle Gin. After making the condiments merge, strain the cocktail into a large cocktail glass and get ready to enjoy it!
Meanwhile, fans of fizzier drinks should try the ?Albermarle Fizz?. All you need are 5 cl of Citadelle Gin, 1 cl raspberry brandy, 2 cl lemon juice, 1 cl raspberry syrup, 10 cl of a club soda of your choice and of course some ice cubes.
